Is SEO Being Phased Out by AI Search? What Businesses Need to Know

No, SEO is not being phased out. AI answers in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity rely on search indexes and on pages that already rank. What is changing is how visibility works: businesses now need to rank and be cited in AI answers, which rewards clear, expert, well-structured content and a consistent online presence.

What has actually changed

Google now shows AI Overviews for many informational searches, and more people ask chatbots for recommendations. Some searches that used to send clicks to websites are answered on the results page. At the same time, AI answers cite sources, and those citations send highly qualified visitors.

Commercial local searches – “emergency plumber Bootle”, “solicitor near me” – still lead to map packs, websites and phone calls. People still need to choose a business, and they still check reviews and websites before they do.

Why AI search depends on SEO

Google AI Overviews are generated from pages in Google’s index, and they tend to cite pages that already rank well. ChatGPT and Perplexity use web search to find sources. If your site cannot be crawled, is thin or is not trusted, it is unlikely to be cited. Strong SEO is the foundation of AI visibility.

What to do now

  1. Structure pages answer-first: a direct 40–60 word answer, then detail.
  2. Use tables, lists and clear headings that AI tools can extract.
  3. Show real expertise: named authors, credentials, data and case studies.
  4. Keep your business details consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  5. Add schema markup for your organisation, services and FAQs.
  6. Earn mentions and reviews on trusted third-party sites.

I cover these in detail on my AI search optimisation page. One law firm site I manage is currently cited in 40 Google AI Overviews.

FAQs

Will AI replace Google search?

Google itself now includes AI answers, but search is not disappearing. The way results look is changing, and businesses need to optimise for both rankings and AI citations.

Is it still worth investing in SEO in 2026?

Yes. Organic search remains one of the largest sources of qualified enquiries, and the same work improves your chances of being recommended by AI tools.
