Overview

Why technical SEO matters before anything else

Google can only rank pages it can find, fetch and understand. If important pages are blocked, slow, duplicated or buried five clicks deep, Google either ignores them or ranks a weaker version. You can spend thousands on content and links and still see nothing move.

I see the same technical problems again and again on Liverpool business websites: service pages set to noindex after a redesign, old URLs returning 404 errors instead of redirecting, the same page reachable at four addresses, huge images slowing mobile pages, and page builders loading several hundred kilobytes of unused code.

Technical SEO is not a one-off tick box. Every plugin update, new page and design change can create new issues. That is why technical monitoring runs every month in my Growth SEO plan, alongside content and link building.

What my technical SEO covers

Crawlability

robots.txt, internal links, crawl depth, orphan pages and crawl budget so Googlebot spends its time on your money pages.

Indexing

Noindex tags, canonicals, duplicate URLs, parameter handling and Search Console coverage reports.

Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift measured on real mobile devices.

Redirects & 404s

Redirect chains, broken links and lost pages mapped and fixed so no link equity is wasted.

Structured data

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Article and Product schema, validated in Google’s Rich Results Test.

Site architecture

A logical silo so every service and location page sits within three clicks of the homepage.

Audit checklist

The technical checks I run on every Liverpool website

AreaWhat I checkWhy it matters
ServerStatus codes, HTTPS, redirects, response timeErrors and slow servers waste crawl budget and frustrate users
IndexingIndex coverage, noindex, canonicals, sitemapsPages Google cannot index cannot rank
RenderingJavaScript content, lazy loading, blocked resourcesGoogle must see the same content users see
SpeedLCP, INP, CLS, image weight, unused CSS and JSPage experience is a confirmed ranking signal
MobileMobile layout, tap targets, font sizesGoogle indexes the mobile version of your site first
ArchitectureClick depth, internal links, orphan pagesLink equity flows to the pages you want to rank
Duplicate contentwww/non-www, trailing slashes, thin tag pagesDuplicates split ranking signals between URLs
SchemaValidity and coverage of structured dataHelps rich results and AI search understand your business

Migrations

Website redesigns and migrations without losing rankings

The most expensive technical SEO mistake I see is a new website launched without a redirect plan. Traffic can fall by half overnight, and it can take months to recover.

Before a redesign or platform move I crawl the old site, export every URL with traffic or links, map each one to its new address, test the redirects on staging and monitor Search Console daily after launch. Migration SEO is available as a fixed-price project from £449.

WordPress

Technical SEO for WordPress, Shopify and custom sites

Most Liverpool small business sites run on WordPress, so I work hands-on inside WordPress with Rank Math, Yoast, caching plugins and page builders. For Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and custom builds I provide a clear, prioritised fix list your developer can follow, and I check the fixes once they are live.

Proof

Technical clean-up in practice

Technical clean-up: 89% of Googlebot requests returning 200 OK after crawl-budget and error fixes.

On a law firm website with four sites to manage, fixing crawl errors, redirects and indexing allowed Google to focus on the pages that generate enquiries. Organic clicks rose from 489 to 8,960 in 6 months.

FAQs

Technical SEO: FAQs

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the part of SEO that makes sure search engines can crawl, render, index and understand your website. It covers site speed, mobile usability, indexing, redirects, site structure and structured data.

How do I know if my site has technical SEO problems?

Warning signs include pages missing from Google, traffic dropping after a redesign, slow mobile pages, and errors in the Pages and Core Web Vitals reports in Google Search Console. My £299 audit checks all of these.

Do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?

Yes, page experience including Core Web Vitals is a confirmed Google ranking signal. It rarely beats relevance on its own, but it can decide close competitions and it directly affects how many visitors turn into enquiries.

Can you fix technical issues or just report them?

On WordPress sites I usually make the fixes myself. For other platforms I write a developer-ready list, prioritised by impact, and re-test once changes are live.

How long do technical SEO fixes take to show results?

Indexing and crawl fixes can show results within 2–6 weeks, once Google recrawls the affected pages. Speed and structure improvements tend to show over 1–3 months.
