Google Business Profile Optimisation: A Guide for Liverpool Businesses

To optimise your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, complete every field, add your services and products, upload real photos, post regularly, and collect and reply to reviews. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and a complete, active profile improves the first and third of those.

Step 1: Get the basics exactly right

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signage – no added keywords, which breaks Google’s guidelines.
  • Address or service area: a real address for verification; hide it if customers do not visit you.
  • Phone number and website that match your site and directory listings.
  • Opening hours, including special hours for bank holidays.

Step 2: Choose categories carefully

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Search your main keyword in Liverpool and check the categories of the businesses in the map pack. Pick the most specific category that describes your core service, then add relevant secondary categories.

Step 3: Add services, products and a description

List every service you offer, using the words customers search for. Add products where relevant. Write a description that explains what you do, who you help and the areas you serve – for example, “plumbing and heating across south Liverpool, including Allerton, Woolton and Garston”.

Step 4: Photos and posts

Upload real photos of your premises, team and work – not stock images. Add new photos every month. Use posts for offers, updates and recent jobs; they keep the profile active and give customers reasons to act.

Step 5: Reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and choice. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a short link, and reply to every review. Never buy reviews or offer incentives – both break Google’s policies.

Review factorWhy it matters
Number of reviewsMore reviews signal prominence
RecencyRecent reviews show you are active
RatingAffects click-through and choice
Keywords in reviewsMentions of services and areas add relevance
Your repliesShow you care and add context

Step 6: Support your profile with your website

Your profile ranks better when your website backs it up: a page for each main service, pages for the areas you serve, consistent NAP details and LocalBusiness schema. My local SEO service covers both sides.

FAQs

Can I use a virtual office for Google Business Profile?

No. Google does not allow virtual offices or mail-drop addresses unless the location is staffed during your stated hours.

How often should I post on Google Business Profile?

Weekly is a good rhythm for most local businesses.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

Common reasons are an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong category, distance from the searcher, or stronger competitors. A local SEO audit identifies the cause.
