What affects how much SEO costs

SEO pricing is driven by how much work is needed to beat the businesses already ranking. The main factors are:

  • Competition. A plumber in Maghull competes with a handful of local firms; a personal injury solicitor in L1 competes with national brands.
  • Geography. One town is cheaper to target than the whole City Region or the UK.
  • Website condition. Technical problems and thin content add work at the start.
  • Authority. A new website with few links needs more link building than an established one.
  • Scope. The number of services, locations and products you want to rank for.

Agency vs freelancer pricing

Liverpool agencies usually charge more because the fee covers account managers, sales teams, offices and management layers as well as the SEO work itself. Freelance consultants have lower overheads, so a similar amount of work often costs 30–50% less.

The trade-off is capacity. An agency can put several people on a very large campaign at once. For most local and small-to-medium businesses, a senior freelancer delivers the same or better results because the experienced person does the work directly. You can compare the two in more detail in my guide to SEO agency vs freelancer.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Be wary of packages under £150–£200 a month that promise page-one rankings or “hundreds of backlinks”. At that price there is very little time for real work, so these packages usually rely on automated directory submissions, spun content or bought links from low-quality networks.

At best these do nothing. At worst they break Google’s spam policies and damage your rankings. If a price looks too good to be true, ask exactly what will be done each month and who will do it.

How to get the best value from your SEO budget

  1. Start with an audit so budget goes to the biggest problems first.
  2. Prioritise the services and areas that bring the most profitable customers.
  3. Ask for monthly reports with Search Console data, not just ranking screenshots.
  4. Avoid long lock-in contracts until you have seen how the provider works.
  5. Give it at least 6 months – SEO compounds over time.
