How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK? What You Should Expect to Pay in 2026

In the UK, most small businesses should expect to pay £300–£1,500 a month for SEO, growing businesses £1,500–£5,000, and large or highly competitive companies £5,000–£20,000+. Freelance SEO consultants typically charge £40–£80 an hour (around £320 a day), agencies £75–£150, and one-off SEO audits range from about £300 to £5,000 depending on site size.

UK SEO prices at a glance

Prices vary widely because SEO is quoted on the work needed, not a fixed product. These ranges are drawn from published UK pricing guides and freelancer rate data, checked in October 2026.

How much should I expect to pay for SEO?

For most UK small businesses, a realistic starting budget is £400–£1,000 a month. That is enough for a competent professional to fix technical issues, optimise your Google Business Profile, improve or create a few pages each month and build some relevant links.

Expect to pay more if any of the following apply:

  • You compete nationally rather than locally
  • You are in a “your money or your life” sector such as legal, finance or health, where trust signals take more work
  • Your website has serious technical problems or very little content
  • You want to rank for many services, locations or products at once
  • Your competitors already invest heavily in SEO

SEO pricing models explained

ModelHow it worksTypical UK cost
Monthly retainerOngoing work each month, usually on a rolling or fixed-term contract£300–£20,000+
Project feeA defined job such as an audit, migration or site rebuild£300–£10,000+
Hourly or day rateConsulting, training or ad-hoc tasks£40–£150+ an hour; £300–£1,000 a day
Per page / per linkContent or link building charged per unit£100–£800 per page

Monthly retainers are the most common because SEO results compound over time. Be cautious about “pay per ranking” deals – they encourage targeting easy, low-value keywords rather than the ones that bring customers.

Freelancer vs agency costs

UK agencies typically charge more than freelancers for the same amount of hands-on work, because fees also cover account managers, sales teams and offices. A senior freelancer is often the best value for small and medium businesses, while agencies suit large campaigns that need many people at once. I compare the two in detail in SEO agency vs freelancer.

Why cheap SEO is expensive

Packages under about £150 a month rarely leave time for real work. They tend to rely on automated directory submissions, low-quality content or bought links, which Google’s spam policies target. The result is usually no improvement – or a penalty that costs more to fix than doing SEO properly in the first place.

How to get the best return from your SEO budget

  1. Start with an audit so money goes to the biggest problems first
  2. Prioritise the services with the best profit margins
  3. Track enquiries and sales, not just rankings
  4. Avoid long lock-in contracts until a provider has proved itself
  5. Allow at least 6 months for results to build
