What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for UK Businesses

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the process of improving a website so it appears higher in Google’s unpaid search results for the searches your customers make. In the UK, where Google handles the vast majority of searches, SEO covers technical health, helpful content, local listings such as Google Business Profile, and links from other trusted websites.

How SEO works

Google uses automated crawlers to discover pages, stores them in its index and then ranks them for each search based on hundreds of signals. Google groups the most important ones into relevance (does the page match the search?), quality (is it helpful, expert and trustworthy?), usability (is it fast and easy to use?) and context (where is the searcher and what do they want?).

SEO is the work of making sure your site performs well on all of those – without paying Google for the position. Paid results (Google Ads) are separate and stop when you stop paying.

The four main types of SEO

TypeWhat it covers
Technical SEOCrawling, indexing, speed, mobile usability, structured data
On-page / content SEOPages that answer what people search for, with clear titles and headings
Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, map pack, reviews, citations for local searches
Off-page SEOLinks and mentions from other trusted websites

SEO in the UK: what is different?

  • Local intent: many UK searches include a town or “near me”, so local SEO matters for most service businesses.
  • UK English: spelling and terms (optimisation, solicitor, postcode) affect relevance.
  • Google.co.uk dominance: Google is by far the most used search engine in the UK, so most SEO work focuses on it.
  • Regulated sectors: UK legal and financial firms must also meet SRA or FCA rules in their content.

SEO and AI search

Google AI Overviews and chatbots like ChatGPT now answer many questions directly, but they draw on pages that rank and are clearly structured. Modern SEO therefore also aims to make your business the source those AI tools cite – often called GEO or AI search optimisation. See AI search optimisation.
